Challenge
Utility vehicles designed for rugged travel often lack optimised cargo layouts and high-fidelity passenger cabin entertainment systems. Factory rear floor designs feature irregular contours, exposed structural elements, and awkward seating gaps, all of which reduce cargo efficiency. These uneven spaces cause equipment to shift during transit, restricting the secure mounting of heavy power systems, refrigeration hardware, and recovery gear.
At the same time, factory automotive audio setups standard in utility designs suffer from clear acoustic limitations. Factory speakers use basic paper cones and minimal internal amplification, resulting in muddy mid-range frequencies, distorted bass notes, and missing high-frequency details.
Standard speaker mounting locations lack adequate sound insulation and damping, allowing external road, tyre, and wind noise to wash out the cabin’s acoustics on long journeys.
Solution
Developing a custom rear platform alongside a dedicated, high-performance cabin speaker configuration addresses both storage and entertainment deficits. Creating a flat floor system provides a rigid foundation for safely mounting heavy overland accessories while cleanly concealing auxiliary electrical components beneath.
The dual-purpose installation implements targeted upgrades to optimise storage space and sound accuracy:
- A custom-engineered,carpeted rear platform replaces the second-row seating area with a flat utility storage deck.
- A ventilated speaker grille built into the custom deck panel permits clear acoustic projection from hidden sound components below.
- Premium Focal ICU100 coaxial speakers replace weak factory door speakers to deliver precise sound across mid and high frequencies.
- Dedicated high-frequency tweeters, flush-mounted in the front A-pillars, create an accurate forward soundstage for cabin passengers.
- High-grade copper speaker cables, shielded RCA lines, and a fused main power distribution block maintain signal purity while protecting the audio system from current surges.
Professional installation by experienced technicians is essential to comply with vehicle manufacturing codes, secure cargo structures against harsh track vibrations, and ensure all electrical circuits are protected by correct fuse thresholds.
Expert routing preserves factory vehicle warranties while protecting sensitive cabin panels and internal wire channels from abrasion.
Execution
Technicians at
Adventure Additions managed two separate installations to overhaul the internal storage layout and audio quality of the Ineos Grenadier.
For the custom rear platform installation:
- Technicians removed the rear passenger seats to create a cargo area.
- A multi-piece structural platform was fabricated from dense timber sheets and covered in durable, non-slip carpet.
- Structural steel legs were bolted directly to the factory floor anchor points to safely support the new deck’s weight.
- Technicians installed a circular metal-mesh ventilation grille on the deck over the subfloor to maintain adequate cooling for the sub-mounted components.
For the primary audio installation:
- The front and rear door cards were carefully unclipped to expose the factory speaker locations.
- Technicians installed the Focal ICU100 premium speakers into custom water-resistant door spacers.
- The matching high-frequency tweeters were wired into dedicated crossover splits and flush-mounted into the front A-pillar trim panels.
- New high-purity copper speaker wire paths were threaded through the rubber door conduits into the main cabin space.
- Technicians routed a dedicated heavy-gauge power supply line from the auxiliary power hub through an independent MIDI fuse block to power the system.
Results
The completed project enhances the cabin’s usability and acoustic atmosphere in the Ineos Grenadier. The custom-built flat platform maximises the rear cargo footprint, providing a rock-solid deck to tie down gear while protecting the auxiliary batteries and audio components hidden safely beneath.
The concurrent speaker upgrade replaces the dull factory sound profile with a clear, dynamic audio experience. The tweeters lift the soundstage to ear level, and the premium door speakers deliver balanced playback that stays sharp at high highway speeds.
