Challenge

Modern utility and adventure vehicles often run into power limits when used off-grid for long stretches. Factory auxiliary circuits are not built to handle the high current needed by appliances such as portable fridges, coffee makers, induction cooktops, or recovery tools.

If you use only the vehicle’s starter battery to power accessories, you risk draining it and getting stranded in remote areas. Also, modern smart alternators lower their voltage quickly to cut emissions, which means secondary batteries often do not get fully charged while driving.

For real self-sufficiency, a vehicle needs a separate system to collect, control, and convert power. This setup should not interfere with starting the engine or harm sensitive electronics.

Solution

An advanced off-grid power management system solves these power issues. By keeping accessory power separate from the starter battery, it keeps the vehicle reliable and provides steady energy for extra devices.

This installation uses high-quality parts to handle every step of energy generation, storage, and distribution:

  • A highly efficient DC-to-DC battery charger takes power from the smart alternator and delivers the right voltage to the auxiliary battery.
  • An advanced MPPT solar charge controller helps get the most power from the solar panels, even when sunlight changes.
  • A top-quality 2000-watt pure sine wave inverter changes low-voltage DC power into steady 240V AC power for household appliances.
  • A smart battery shunt works like a fuel gauge, tracking real-time power use, battery charge, and how much time is left.

 

Having experienced technicians install the system is essential. This ensures the setup meets safety rules, protects the vehicle from electrical problems, and keeps your accessories safe.

Proper cable routing and connections help keep your factory warranty and make sure the system stays reliable, even on rough off-road trips.

Execution

The Adventure Additions team started by choosing the best spots inside the Ineos Grenadier’s cabin and cargo area for the main parts. They made sure the weight was balanced and that there was enough airflow around the cooling fins.

Wiring execution followed strict automotive standards:

  • High-amperage twin-core copper cables were covered with protective split-conduit tubing to stop them from rubbing against sharp steel edges.
  • Each circuit had heavy-duty MIDI and ANL fuses placed right next to the power sources to protect against too much current.
  • Technicians firmly mounted the Victron SmartSolar MPPT, Orion XS DC-DC charger, and Invicta Pure Power inverter on strong backing panels.
  • The SmartShunt was installed in line with the main negative battery terminal to accurately track all current going into the solar input lines from the rooftop panels, which were routed down via weatherproof entry
  • glands, terminating cleanly into the dedicated MPPT charge controller.
  • All connections were crimped and finished with adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing to prevent moisture and dust from entering.

 

Results

Once installed, the system turns the Ineos Grenadier into a self-sufficient mobile power station. It keeps the starter battery separate from accessory loads, so you can use 240V appliances and 12V accessories at the same time.

The DC-to-DC charger keeps the battery healthy during short drives, and the solar system keeps charging the batteries while you are parked at camp.

All components connect through wireless monitoring, so you can see real-time power generation and use on one screen.
