Challenge
Making a touring van more useful often means dealing with limited space inside. Keeping large items like recovery gear, tools, or extra fuel in the living area can reduce comfort and make things harder to reach. Full-sized spare tyres are especially hard to store inside and take up a lot of room. Without a solid way to climb up, getting to the roof for cleaning or maintenance is also tough. To solve these problems, it helps to move heavy or bulky gear outside the van while still keeping it safe and easy to reach.
Solution
Mounting specialised exterior hardware is the most effective way to reclaim internal living space and improve vehicle functionality. Rear-mounted ladders and carriers provide a rigid framework for securing heavy loads outside the cabin. Storage boxes specifically designed for external use protect equipment from weather and theft while keeping dirty or recovery items out of the clean interior.
Having experienced technicians install these accessories is important for safety. They ensure all mounting points are strong enough to withstand movement during driving. Proper installation also protects the van’s bodywork and keeps the accessories secure. When a qualified team does the work, you keep your warranty and make sure your van meets road safety rules.
Execution
The Adventure Additions team began by preparing the rear doors of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for the strong mounting brackets. They lined up each bracket with the factory hinge points to evenly distribute the weight across the door frame. The technicians placed the ladder and wheel carrier on the driver’s side door, ensuring the tyre mount did not obstruct visibility or prevent the door from working properly.
On the passenger side, the team installed the cargo carrier and WeldBeat storage box. They used strong fasteners to attach the box to the carrier frame, making sure everything was level and clear of the rear lights. Each part was checked to ensure it would not come loose due to road vibrations. They also inspected the seals to keep the storage units weatherproof and checked the ladder steps for stability.
Duration
The total installation time at the Adventure Additions Braeside Facility for this project was approximately 6 and a half hours.
Results
The installation moved several large items to the outside of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The rear doors now hold a full-sized spare tyre and a secure WeldBeat storage box. This setup gives the owner a built-in ladder for roof access and more living space inside. All parts are firmly attached to the chassis and door hinges, ensuring the van remains stable on long trips.
