Challenge
Towing a heavy trailer or caravan puts a lot of strain on a vehicle. Without a proper braking system, the extra weight can make it harder to stop and may cause the driver to lose control in sudden situations. While high-performance SUVs have enough engine power for towing, they still need the right equipment to safely manage the extra force from the trailer.
Keeping external batteries or appliances powered while driving is another challenge. Most vehicles are not wired to handle the high current needed to charge a caravan battery or run a fridge on the go. Without a strong electrical connection, you might arrive with dead batteries.
Solution
The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite V3 helps solve braking issues by offering two modes: proportional for normal driving and user-controlled for off-road or heavy loads. The driver can adjust the braking from the dashboard, so the trailer and vehicle stop smoothly together.
A 50A Grey Anderson Plug is a top choice for high-current transfer. It lets electricity flow steadily from the vehicle’s alternator to the trailer. With a Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR), power only flows when the engine is running, so the main battery won’t accidentally drain.
Having experienced technicians install these systems is important to protect the complex electrical setup in a Mercedes-Benz. High-end SUVs use advanced wiring that can be sensitive to changes. Professional installation ensures everything meets safety standards and protects your warranty.
Execution
The Adventure Additions team started by finding the best spot for the Redarc control knob. For this GLE 450, they placed the dial on the lower dash, where the driver can easily reach it, ensuring it fits with the car’s interior. They also secured the main control unit behind the dashboard to keep it stable.
The team ran the brake controller wiring through the firewall using existing grommets to keep everything sealed against the weather. For the Anderson Plug, they used 8BS heavy-duty cables from the battery to the back of the vehicle. The cables were protected in conduit and attached along the chassis, away from moving parts and heat.
They installed a 140 Amp Narva Voltage Sensitive Relay to control power flow. This relay works like an automatic switch, only sending power to the Anderson Plug when the alternator reaches the right voltage. At the back, they finished by mounting the 50A plug and a Trailer Vision cover near the tow bar for easy access.
Duration
The full installation of the Redarc Tow-Pro V3 and 50A Anderson Plug at Adventure Additions Braeside takes about 7 hours.
Results
The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 is now ready for heavy towing. The Redarc system gives smooth, reliable braking on all types of roads. The Anderson Plug keeps power flowing to the trailer, so you can use a fridge or keep batteries charged on long trips. Everything is installed neatly, so the car still looks and feels like a luxury vehicle while gaining important new features.
