Challenge
Towing heavy trailers or caravans is risky if the vehicle and trailer brakes do not work together. Without the right setup, your vehicle’s brakes can wear out faster and may not perform well during sudden stops or on steep hills. Running appliances like fridges or battery chargers on the trailer also needs a strong power connection from the vehicle, which standard factory wiring often cannot provide.
Solution
A proportional braking system allows the driver to control the trailer brakes from inside the car, making sure the trailer slows down at the same rate as the vehicle. This helps prevent jackknifing and gives the driver more control. A strong power connection at the back of the vehicle also keeps the trailer’s batteries charged while driving.
Experienced technicians must install these systems to meet Australian safety standards. Professional installation also protects the BYD Shark 6’s electronics from wiring errors. Careful cable routing and proper fusing help keep your warranty valid and make sure the connections last, even on rough roads.
Execution
The Adventure Additions team began by choosing the best place for the control interface inside the BYD’s cabin. They mounted the main unit behind the dashboard to protect it from vibration. Custom wiring connected to the vehicle’s brake signal without changing the original electrical system.
For the extra power system, the team ran heavy-duty 8BS battery cables from the front of the vehicle to the rear bumper. They covered the cables with protective tubing to prevent wear and heat damage. A 50A circuit breaker was installed near the power source for safety. The 50A Grey Anderson plug was mounted on a custom bracket, making it easy to reach and keeping it clean. Every connection was tested to make sure it worked well and had no voltage drop.
Duration
The complete installation at Adventure Additions Braeside, including fitting all parts and electrical testing, takes about five hours.
Results
The BYD Shark 6 is now set up for heavy towing. The brake controller makes it easy for the driver to manage trailer brakes, and the rear Anderson plug provides steady 50A power to keep trailer systems running on long trips. All parts are installed to a high standard for safety and reliability.
